Day1

Windhoek

Explore Windhoek during the day and meet your group and your Tour Leader in the evening at 18:00 to get acquainted and review your trip details. Windhoek is a tiny capital town but with loads of interesting things to offer.  One of the most famous is the display of 33 meteorites, the Gibeon Meteorites in the Post Street Mall. Here you can take pictures of and touch these extra-terrestrial bodies that are corrosive resistant due to the high amount of nickel in them. Shopping opportunities abound and for the historically inclined there are many museums and historical buildings within walking distance around the town centre. One of the most widely photographed and a historical landmark is the Christ Church, a Lutheran church, built in the Gothic revival style.

Day2

Windhoek to Gobabeb

Your journey will start after a wholesome breakfast, heading southwest towards the Namib Desert. Enjoy a scenic drive, beautiful in a unique and rugged way. You will drive through the oddly angled rock formations of the Kuiseb pass and continue west towards the towering red dunes of the Namib Desert where you will find the Gobabeb Training & Research Centre. Gobabeb was founded in 1962 and the center conducts research on climate, ecology, geomorphology and test, demonstrate and promote Appropriate Technologies. Two days of interesting and educational activities lie ahead. After dinner, you will get the opportunity to go scorpion hunting or just relax next to the campfire and count the satellites passing over in the starlit Namibian sky.

Day3

Gobabeb

After breakfast, you will go on a Desert Research Station tour where the local guides will explain and demonstrate all the different tests and research that they are conducting on a daily basis. In the afternoon, you will go on a guided nature walk to learn more about the creatures living in the seemingly barren desert. You will learn that there is much more in a desert than what meets the eye and that going about unseen is a survival trait of many of the desert’s inhabitants. In the late afternoon, you can climb a nearby sand dune to enjoy a sundowner and stunning desert sunset from above.

Gobabeb to Swakopmund

Continue to Swakopmund with its cooler Atlantic sea air, cultural experiences and options for some extreme adventures like quad biking, sand boarding, 4×4 safaris, skydiving (weather permitting) and more. The only meal provided today is breakfast as Swakopmund has plenty of great places to eat local cuisine. Swakopmund offers a variety of bakeries and cafes with a selection of reasonably priced meals (budget approximately $5-12 USD per meal).

Swakopmund

Swakopmund’s big variety of things to see and do caters for a wide scope of tastes and styles. You can take a walk along the beach and dip your toes in the icy Atlantic Ocean, or visit the Krystal Galerie which boasts with the largest Quartz Crystal Cluster on display in the World, weighing in at 14 100 kilograms. Browse the many excellent bookshops and curio shops and spoil yourself with a unique gift from the area. If adrenalin and outdoors is your thing then you can enjoy optional activities like quad biking, sand boarding, 4×4 safaris, skydiving (weather permitting) and more.

Day6

Swakopmund to Brandberg

Today you will be leaving the coast and travel north to Brandberg which is home to Königstein, at 2573m above sea level the highest peak in Namibia. In the afternoon you can either relax at your campsite or make use of the opportunity to visit the famous White Lady Bushmen painting in the Brandberg.  Although the walk is not strenuous, it takes about 2 hours in a very hot environment so be sure to be armed with a hat, sunglasses, comfortable closed shoes and plenty water and sunscreen. Enjoy the breath-taking scenery along the riverbed on the way to the famous “lady”, with multi-coloured rocks that take on various shades of flaming orange in the late afternoon, giving the mountain its name. Around the lodge area there is a good chance to see the famous desert elephant, sometimes casually wandering into the lodge premises.

Day7

Brandberg to Twyfelfontein

Today is a short drive to another area famous for desert elephant. Twyfelfontein means “spring of doubt”.  Twyfelfontein is a site of ancient art and sacred rituals portrayed in the at least 2500 rock engravings found there. It was also proclaimed Namibia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. At Twyfelfontein you will have the opportunity to discover one of Namibia’s oldest tribes, the Damara. You might want to add a visit to the Damara Living Museum to your optional activities list.  This project is a reconstruction of the traditional culture of the Damara, a contribution to preserving the culture of the tribe and an income provider to the community.  You will also have the opportunity to do an optional guided walk to an engraving site.

Twyfelfontein to Opuwo

The morning starts early for the drive to Opuwo. On arrival, we will visit a local school we have been supporting since 2010. In the afternoon, we will go on a guided walk to a traditional Himba village and learn more about the Himba culture and the Himba tribe with their trademark red ochre body paint.

Day9

Opuwo to Etosha National Park

Depart after breakfast for Etosha National Park, one of Southern Africa’s best loved wildlife sanctuaries. Head out for an afternoon game drive to search for elephant, the unique black-faced impala, zebra, endangered black rhino or any of the more than 100 mammal species the park is home to. In the rainy season, the salt pans turn into shallow lakes, with pelicans, flamingos and other bird species flocking to this temporary water haven. Animals often cluster around the watering holes close to the campsites and this offers you the unique opportunity to sit and wait for the animals to come to you. These fenced watering holes have seating areas and are perfectly safe. Floodlights give you the opportunity to sit at the waterhole right through the night and enjoy the interaction all the different species have with each other around the water.

Etosha National Park

Enjoy a full day’s game drive in our Premium Overland Safari Vehicle. Gather memories of unique sights that you will not likely experience again. Watch how ghostly grey-white elephants bathe themselves in the white dust of the area or zoom in on the magnificent sight of giraffes etched against a wide and open horizon. Overnight at another beautiful camp inside Etosha National Park and maybe you are just lucky enough to fall asleep with the haunting call of hyena or a lion roaring in the distance.

Day11

Etosha National Park to Windhoek

Enjoy a final short morning game drive before travelling south to Windhoek, Namibia’s capital.  Spend the last few hours of the day exploring Windhoek and its strong German influence. You’ll have the option to celebrate your last night and your new friendships at one of Windhoek’s famous restaurants. You can also book a day or two extra to properly explore this quaint little capital town. Windhoek is the “getting on” and “getting off” hub for people who have booked shorter “legs” of your combo trip. You might lose some of your travel companions and new people might join. You might also have a change of vehicle and adventure crew (Tour Leader and Driver.) Although it might sound a bit daunting, please be assured that your vehicle will be the same standard and your adventure crew are very experienced in dealing with these changes to make it as smooth as possible. All adventure crew is committed to giving the best possible service but because all have their own style, own special recipes and own passion in regards to culture, fauna and flora, geology etc. having a change of crew will broaden your experience on the trip immensely.

Windhoek to Ghanzi

Depart Windhoek early for a long drive through the eastern part of Namibia, crossing the border into Botswana and travelling into the heart of the Kalahari Desert. Ghanzi Trail Blazers is the farm where San (Bushmen) live who still have the knowledge of an ancient lifestyle and who are eager to welcome visitors into their almost forgotten world. In the evening enjoy an optional ancient dance ritual performed around a campfire by the San and if the night is clear, enjoy the sparkling, starry skies for which Ghanzi is famous.

Day13

Ghanzi to Maun

Enjoy a morning walk with the San (Bushmen) as they display their survival skill’s that’s been passed on from generation to generation before departing Ghanzi and arriving in Maun, Botswana’s fifth largest town, after lunchtime. Once you arrive in Maun you will have the option to get a spectacular birds-eye view of the Okavango Delta from above in a small fixed wing aircraft (weather permitting). Looking down on the Delta from the aircraft, you will get a fair idea of the magnitude of this massive mix of land and water with its intricate system of channels and islands. You might also see families of elephant, giraffe, and herds of buffalo or even hippos from the air. If you skip the flight, you’ll have the chance to kick back and relax at the lodge.

Day 13: Ghanzi to Okavango Delta
Today we leave early morning for a long drive north-east across the Botswana interior towards Maun, Botswana’s fifth largest town. Once you arrive in Maun you will have the option to go on a 2-night fly-in safari into the Okavango Delta. This camp is accessible by light aircraft only, a 20-minute flight from Maun. On arrival, you will be met by your personal guide and welcomed to the island. Your camp for the next 2 nights is situated on the edge of Chief’s Island, deep in the heart of the Okavango, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve.

Day14

Maun

Today you will experience a new way of travelling – to go into the Okavango Delta with a mokoro in the same way as the local people do. A mokoro is a traditional dug-out canoe that seats two people. Your engine is a human being called a poler. The first part of the journey is in a 4×4 vehicle to the “polling station” where the mokoros and polers are waiting. Once you are comfortable and laid back in your mokoro, the slow and tranquil journey into The Delta begins. Gliding along on the quiet water you will have an unlimited source of opportunities to take stunning pictures of your surroundings. How long the mokoro journey will take, will depend on the time of year and water levels of the Delta.  You will stop for lunch at an island and enjoy a nature walk of a few hours. Then you head back to Maun again in your mokoro enjoying a last hour or two on the water while the late afternoon sun starts heading for the horizon.

Day 14: Okavango Delta
Rise early for a nature walk with your own professional guide (a maximum of two guests per guide), returning for a late breakfast. Relax at camp reading a book or cooling down from the midday heat in the fresh waters of the delta (under the watchful eye of your guide). In the afternoon after the midday heat has dissipated you will venture out again into nature in search of birds and possibly some wildlife. Should you wish to explore for the whole day, we’ll be happy to pack you a picnic lunch. You will also get a chance to go to the nearby islands in a mokoro, the traditional dug-out canoe that seats two people. Your engine is a human being called a poler. Spend your last night in the heart of the Delta and African bush and fall asleep to the sound of hippos grunting. Early the next morning you will fly back to Maun to meet up with your group.

Maun to Elephant Sands

Set out for Elephant Sands, which is close to the Botswanan village of Nata. Elephant Sands is famous for its watering hole, voted as one of the top ten watering holes in Africa. At this watering hole, you can expect to see animals such as wild dogs, different antelope species and of course elephants that walk through the campsite searching for fresh water. This will probably be the closest you will get to these wild animals on foot. With luck on your side, you may have the wonderful and unique experience of sitting in front of your tented room, watching elephants and other animals come and go to quench their thirst at the watering hole while you sip on a sundowner yourself.

Day 15: Maun to Elephant Sands

Elephant Sands to Chobe River (Kasane)

Continue to the small town of Kasane, which is adjacent to the Chobe National Park & Chobe River. Relish the views during your included afternoon sunset boat cruise. Take your own sundowner with you as you look for wildlife on the banks of the Chobe River. Game such as elephant, buffalo, kudu, bushbuck, hippo, giraffe and sable are commonly seen along the river edge, and it’s a birdwatcher’s paradise during the summer months. (You have an opportunity to go on an optional photo safari at your own expense, however, you would forfeit the included afternoon sunset boat cruise).

Day17

Chobe River (Kasane) to Livingstone (Victoria Falls)

You can’t ask for a better way to start your day in search of wild animals on your included game drive in Chobe National Park. Afterwards, cross into Zambia and enjoy a short drive to the magnificent Victoria Falls and its charming little town, Livingstone. This is your home base for the next two nights. The Victoria Falls is not the widest or highest falls but is regarded as the world’s biggest. It produces a breath-taking curtain of falling water as it drops into the gorge below. See why it’s considered among one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Livingstone (Victoria Falls)

Today you will have time to do some of the action-filled activities that the area offers. Bungee jump or gorge swing off the Victoria Falls Bridge that links Zambia and Zimbabwe and have a different view of the Victoria Falls at the same time. This bridge is constructed to carry railway, road and foot traffic. For an adrenaline activity, closer to the Zambezi River, choose a half day or full day white water rafting adventure. Many of our groups opt to book their final evening together aboard a sunset cruise along the Zambezi River with game-viewing, beautiful scenery and an open bar. Windhoek is the “getting on” and “getting off” hub for people who have booked shorter “legs” of your combo trip. You might lose some of your travel companions and new people might join. Livingstone (Victoria Falls) to Gwango (Hwange area)

After breakfast, we will cross the border into Zimbabwe and stop at our Africa4us Kids Project to either help with construction or deliver books and toys. Afterwards we will continue to Gwango Elephant Lodge which is situated just outside Hwange National Park, named after a local chief. This park is the largest park in Zimbabwe occupying roughly 14,650 square kilometres. Look forward to an included afternoon open vehicle game drive on the Gwango estate. After dinner, you will have the opportunity to go on an optional night game drive in this estate which will give you the opportunity to discover nocturnal animals such as porcupines, civet cats, genet and leopard.

Day20

Gwango (Hwange area) to Bulawayo

We will head south towards Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second, largest city, and Matobo National Park, which is at the Matobo or Matopos Hills, a scenic area of granite kopjes and wooded valleys. On your way, we visit the Painted Dog Conservation Project. Painted Dogs, also known as African Wild Dogs, are amongst Africa’s most endangered species. This project is involved in various conservation programs such as anti-poaching, rehabilitation, reintroduction and pack monitoring. After the project visit, you continue to Big Cave Camp, also known as” the safari lodge on the rocks” which will be your home for the next two nights. High up on the granite outcrop on which the lodge is built, you will have a magnificent view of Matobo National Park below.

Bulawayo (Matobo National Park)

Enjoy a day filled with the best that Matobo National Park offers, from a game drive to looking for rhino on foot, bringing you as close as possible with these ancient looking giants. Visitors to Matobo National Park regularly spot white and black rhino, sable antelope and impala, among other wildlife. Return to Big Cave Camp after your exciting day and enjoy a sundowner while watching another spectacular African sunset.

Bulawayo to Tshipise

We cross the Zimbabwe / South African Border today. We will overnight at the Tshipise Forever Resort, “Tshipise” means “something warm”, and the famous Tshipise koppie towers protectively over the resort. Giant Baobab trees dot the landscape and the resort’s camping grounds are barely visible among the mopane, red bushwillow and jakkalsbessie trees. This lush Bushveld retreat enchants jaded city dwellers. Soak your cares away in the healing waters of the mineral pools.

Tshipise to Kruger National Park

Today you travel to the famous Kruger National Park, now part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park which forms with parks in Mozambique and Zimbabwe a natural sanctuary for a huge variety of animals. Here they live a natural life where they must fend for food and territory the same way they did for thousands of years. Here they can start following ancient migratory routes again because fences are coming down between the parks. En route to your campsite, enjoy a game drive in your Premium Overland Safari Vehicle and get ready to spot hippos, giraffes, elephants, zebras, lions, and many other species in one of Africa’s greatest wildlife areas. You’ll have the option to book an open vehicle night game drive if available.

Kruger National Park

Enjoy another full day game drive in Kruger National Park with approximately 2000 plant, 53 fish, 34 amphibian, 118 reptile, 517 bird and 147 mammal species ready for you to discover. You will experience first-hand why Kruger National Park is known as the flagship of South African national parks. Enjoy a game drive en route to the campsite. Kruger National Park to Johannesburg

Drive to Johannesburg for your last night of the trip. Johannesburg is South Africa’s largest city, and also known as Egoli, or The City of Gold, referring to the gold mining history of this fast-paced city. Book a day or two post tour to explore this fast-paced city. A visit to Gold Reef City, the amusement park and museum built on an old mine shaft will give you the opportunity for a ride on the Shaft of Terror, a vertical-drop roller coaster that is known as the tallest and fastest roller coaster in Africa due to its sheer 47-metre drop. For the historically inclined there is the ever-popular Soweto tour or just jump on a Hop-On-Hop-Off bus to discover Johannesburg at your own pace.   Tonight, you will have the opportunity to have dinner in one of the many excellent restaurants the city has to offer.
