Day 1

Cape Town

Explore the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town during the day and meet your group and your Tour Leader in the evening at 18:00 to get acquainted and review your trip details. Cape Town offers an unbelievable variety of experiences, tastes and sightseeing. Try a variety of exotic tastes, like some of the delicious Cape Malay curries, the famous local dish Bobotie, or the freshest seafood at one of exquisite seafood restaurants at the V&A Waterfront. Make sure to arrive a day early to go to world famous Robben Island where former President Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison, visit Cape Point or go with a cable car up Table Mountain to enjoy a panoramic view of Cape Town from the top.

Day 2

Cape Town to Trawal

This morning you will leave behind the delights of Cape Town and depart on the first leg of your journey into the unknown. The first overnight stop will be on a small vineyard farm in the vicinity of the Cederberg Mountains. Here grapes are produced for the local cellars and you will have the opportunity to taste and buy some of the local wines in an optional wine tasting activity.

Day 3

Trawal to Gariep River

Travel north through the Northern Cape’s vast fields of wild flowers (in bloom between August and November) and visit our Africa4us Kids Project that we run in conjunction with the local orphanage and primary school at Kamieskroon Children’s Trust. After the visit, we continue north to reach the Namibian border by midday. Head to the Namibian side of the South Africa / Namibia border. End the day with a spectacular sunset viewed from a nearby hill.

Day 4

Gariep River to the Fish River Canyon

Wake up to a quiet morning while you watch the sun rise over the Gariep River, peacefully gliding along its way. You can have a slow morning and sleep in a bit or go on an optional canoe trip down the river. Later during the morning, you travel to the Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa.  As the sun slips over the canyon’s rim, experience an awe-inspiring sunset to end your day of exploration.

Day 5

Fish River Canyon to Sesriem

Today you have and early departure and a long drive north to the Namib Desert. On the way to Sesriem you will pass the small towns of Bethanien and Helmeringhausen and a farm settlement here and there, but other than that it will mostly just be the wide open Namibian landscape with spectacular scenery. When you arrive in the late afternoon, you will visit the Sesriem Canyon and admire the lofty red sand dunes in the distance that form a gateway into the Namib Desert, which means “vast place.” The next morning you will visit Sossusvlei and Deadvlei.

Day 6

Sesriem to Boesman’s Camp

An early departure will allow you to experience a beautiful desert sunrise over the dunes. Climb the majestic Dune 45 before continuing to the entrance of Sossusvlei, a seemingly endless expanse of sand dunes. In the afternoon, you’ll have the option of a guided walk during which you’ll explore these desert dunes and learn about the survival skills of many of the different inhabitants of the desert, including the San (Bushmen).

Day 7

Boesman’s Camp to Swakopmund

Depart for the Atlantic coast, to the holiday town Swakopmund.  There will be plenty opportunities to stop for photos along the way as you cross the Tropic of Capricorn and drive through the surreal landscapes of the Kuiseb and Gaub passes. You’ll have plenty of free time to explore Swakopmund at your leisure and indulge in a wide variety of activities. This beach resort town’s German influences can be seen to this day in its German-inspired architecture and its many German-speaking inhabitants.

Day 8

Swakopmund

Swakopmund’s variety of attractions and activities, cater for all tastes and styles. You can take a walk along the beach and dip your toes in the icy Atlantic Ocean, or visit the Kristal Gallery which boasts with the largest Quartz Crystal Cluster on display in the world, weighing in at 14,100 kilograms. Browse the many excellent bookshops and curio shops and spoil yourself with a unique gift from the area. If adrenalin and outdoors is your thing then you can enjoy optional activities like quad biking, sand boarding, 4×4 safaris, skydiving (weather permitting) and more.

Day 9

Swakopmund to Brandberg

The journey north continues, with Brandberg the next destination.  You can visit the famous White Lady Bushmen painting in the Brandberg Mountain which is the highest point in Namibia standing at 2,573m above sea level. Although the walk is not strenuous, it takes about 2 hours in a very hot environment so be sure to be armed with a hat, sunglasses, comfortable closed shoes and plenty water and sunscreen. Enjoy the breath-taking scenery along the riverbed on the way to the famous “lady”, with multi-coloured rocks that takes on various shades of flaming orange in the late afternoon, giving the mountain its name.

Day 10

Brandberg to Twyfelfontein

Today is a short drive to another area famous for desert elephant. Twyfelfontein means “spring of doubt”. Like Brandberg, Twyfelfontein is a site of ancient art and sacred rituals portrayed in the at least 2500 rock engravings found there. It was also proclaimed Namibia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. At Twyfelfontein you will have the opportunity to discover more about one of Namibia’s oldest tribes, the Damara. You might want to add a visit to the Damara Living Museum to your optional activities list.  This project is a reconstruction of the traditional culture of the Damara, a contribution to preserving the culture of the tribe and an income provider to the community. You will also have the opportunity to do an optional guided walk to an engraving site.

Twyfelfontein to Opuwo

The morning starts early for the drive to Opuwo. In the afternoon, we will go on a guided walk to a traditional Himba village and learn more about the Himba culture and the Himba tribes with their trademark, red ochre body paint.

Day 12

Opuwo to Etosha National Park

Travel through the vast expanses of Northern Namibia to Etosha National Park, one of Southern Africa’s most loved wildlife sanctuaries. This trip goes through a previously restricted area in the park.  Head out for a game drive to search for elephant, antelope and lion around their watering holes. Etosha is home to more than 100 species of mammals including the endangered black rhino. It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise with species such as the famous Kori Bustard, ostrich, several vulture and eagle species and after heavy rains, you might even find water birds such as flamingos and pelicans. Observe the animals clustered around watering holes after sunset near your campsite, which is safe and well-lit with floodlights. Overnight in the newest camp in Etosha National Park.

Day 13

Etosha National Park

Enjoy a full day’s game drive in your fully air-conditioned Adventure Overland Safari Vehicle. You can also book an optional night game drive. Gather memories of unique sights that you will not likely experience again. Watch how ghostly grey-white elephants bathe themselves in the white dust of the area or zoom in on the magnificent sight of giraffes etched against a wide and open horizon. Overnight in the newest camp inside Etosha National Park and maybe you are just lucky enough to fall asleep with the haunting call of hyena or a lion roaring in the distance.

Day 14

Etosha National Park to Windhoek

Travel to Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, after which you’ll trade your sleeping bag for a twin room on your last night of the tour. Spend the last few hours of the day exploring Windhoek and its strong German influence. You’ll have the option to celebrate your last night and your new friendships at one of Windhoek’s well know restaurants (budget $25-30 USD for dinner). Windhoek is the “getting on” and “getting off” hub for people who have booked shorter “legs” of your combo trip. You might lose some of your travel companions and new people might join. You might also have a change of vehicle and adventure crew (Tour Leader and Driver.) Although it might sound a bit daunting, please be assured that your vehicle will be the same standard and your adventure crew are very experienced in dealing with these changes to make it as smooth as possible. All adventure crew is committed to giving the best possible service but because all have their own style, own special recipes and own passion in regards to culture, fauna and flora, geology etc. having a change of crew will broaden your experience on the trip immensely.

Day15

Windhoek to Ghanzi

Depart Windhoek early for a long drive through the eastern part of Namibia, crossing the border into Botswana and travelling into the heart of the Kalahari Desert. Ghanzi is the area where San (Bushmen) live who still have the knowledge of an ancient lifestyle and who are eager to welcome visitors into their almost forgotten world. In the evening, you can enjoy an optional ancient dance ritual performed around a campfire by the San and if the night is clear, enjoy the sparkling, starry skies for which Ghanzi is famous.

Day16

Ghanzi to Maun

Enjoy an optional morning walk with the San (Bushmen) as they display their survival skills that have been passed on from generation to generation before departing Ghanzi.  Arrive in Maun, Botswana’s fifth largest town, after lunchtime. Once you arrive in Maun you will have the option to get a spectacular birds-eye view of the Okavango Delta from above in a small fixed wing aircraft (weather permitting). Looking down on the Delta from the aircraft, you will get a fair idea of the magnitude of this massive mix of land and water with its intricate system of channels and islands. You might also see families of elephant, giraffe, and herds of buffalo or even hippos from the air. If you skip the flight, you’ll have the chance to kick back and relax at the campsite.

Day 16: Ghanzi to Okavango Delta
Today we leave early morning for a long drive north-west across the Botswana interior towards Maun, Botswana’s fifth largest town. Once you arrive in Maun you will have the option to go on a 2-night fly-in safari into the Okavango Delta. This camp is accessible by light aircraft only, a 20-minute flight from Maun. On arrival, you will be met by your personal guide and welcomed to the island. Your camp for the next 2 nights is situated on the edge of Chief’s Island, deep in the heart of the Okavango, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve.

Day17

Maun

Today you will experience a new way of travelling– we go into the Okavango Delta with a mokoro in the same way as the local people do. A mokoro is a traditional dug-out canoe that seats two people. Your engine is a human being called a poler. The first part of the journey is in a 4×4 vehicle to the “polling station” where the mokoros and polers are waiting. Once you are comfortable and laid back in your mokoro, the slow and tranquil journey into the Delta begins. Gliding along on the quiet water you will have an unlimited source of opportunities to take stunning pictures of your surroundings. How long the mokoro journey will take, will depend on the time of year and water levels of the Delta. You will stop for lunch at an island and enjoy a nature walk of a few hours. Then you head back to Maun again in your mokoro enjoying a last hour or two on the water while the late afternoon sun starts heading for the horizon.

Day 17: Okavango Delta
Rise early for a nature walk with your own professional guide (a maximum of two guests per guide), returning for a late breakfast. Relax at camp reading a book or cooling down from the midday heat in the fresh waters of the delta (under the watchful eye of your guide). In the afternoon after the midday heat has dissipated you will venture out again into nature in search of birds and possibly some wildlife. Should you wish to explore for the whole day, we’ll be happy to pack you a picnic lunch. You will also get a chance to go to the nearby islands in a mokoro, the traditional dug-out canoe that seats two people. Your engine is a human being called a poler. Spend your last night in the heart of the Delta and African bush and fall asleep to the sound of hippos grunting. Early the next morning you will fly back to Maun to meet up with your group.

Day18

Maun to Elephant Sands

Set out for Elephant Sands, which is close to the Botswanan village of Nata. Elephant Sands is famous for its watering hole, voted as one of the top ten watering holes in Africa. At this watering hole, you can expect to see animals such as wild dogs, different antelope species and of course elephants that walk through the campsite searching for fresh water. This will probably be the closest you will get to these wild animals on foot.

Day19

Elephant Sands to Chobe River (Kasane)

Continue to the small town of Kasane, which is adjacent to the Chobe National Park & Chobe River. Relish the views during your included afternoon sunset boat cruise. Take your own sundowner with you as you look for wildlife on the banks of the Chobe River. Game such as elephant, buffalo, kudu, bushbuck, hippo, giraffe and sable are commonly seen along the river edge, and it’s a birdwatcher’s paradise during the summer months. (You have an opportunity to go on an optional Photo Safari at your own expense, however, you would forfeit the included afternoon sunset boat cruise).

Day20

Chobe River (Kasane) to Livingstone (Victoria Falls)

You can’t ask for a better way to start your day in search of wild animals on your included game drive in the Chobe National Park. Afterwards, cross into Zambia and enjoy a short drive to the magnificent Victoria Falls and its charming little town. This is your home base for the next two nights. The Victoria Falls is not the widest or highest falls but is regarded as the world’s biggest. It produces a breath-taking curtain of falling water as it drops into the gorge below. See why it’s considered among one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Day21

Livingstone (Victoria Falls)

Today you will have time to do some of the action-filled activities that the area offers. Bungee jump or gorge swing off the Victoria Falls Bridge that links Zambia and Zimbabwe and have a different view of the Victoria Falls at the same time. This bridge is constructed to carry railway, road and foot traffic. For an adrenaline-filled activity closer to the Zambezi River, choose a half day or full day white water rafting adventure.  Many of our groups opt to book their final evening together aboard a sunset cruise along the Zambezi River with game-viewing, beautiful scenery and an open bar.
